Microneedling Pre and Post Care
Pre-Care: Preparing for Your Microneedling Treatment
- Plan for Recovery: After your session, allow 3-5 days for possible redness, bruising, and skin flaking.
- Avoid Irritating Products: Seven days before your appointment, avoid using retinol, retinoids, glycolic or salicylic acids, benzoyl peroxide, alpha/beta hydroxy acids, astringents, Vitamin C, or hair removal creams like Nair®.
- Contact Us if Skin Is Irritated: If your skin becomes irritated or inflamed, please contact us at least 24 hours before your appointment to reschedule. If you have conditions like psoriasis, cystic acne, or other inflammatory issues, notify your clinician during your consultation.
- Reschedule for Active Cold Sores or Shingles: You must postpone the treatment if you have a cold sore, fever blister, canker sore, or shingles. If you are prone to these, contact us one week prior for medication recommendations.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Microneedling is not recommended for clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Cancer Treatments: Patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy cannot receive microneedling. Those in remission must wait six months before proceeding.
- Botox® and Microneedling Scheduling: You may schedule microneedling before Botox®/Dysport® on the same day, but not vice versa. Wait 24 hours after microneedling before receiving Botox® injections.
- Disclose Medical Conditions and Medications: Inform your clinician about any medical conditions, allergies, medications, or history of anaphylaxis to avoid complications.
- Preferred Pain Relief: If you need pain relief before treatment, take Tylenol® (acetaminophen), as it will not increase bruising. One gram taken one hour before the appointment is recommended to reduce discomfort.
- Accutane® Use: If you have used Accutane®, wait at least six months before scheduling microneedling.
- Shaving Guidelines: Men should shave 24 hours before treatment. Any excess hair in the treatment area may need to be shaved.
Post-Care: After Your Microneedling Treatment
It is important to keep your skin well-hydrated after the SkinPen procedure.
Microneedling causes a temporary increase in water loss so keeping your skin
hydrated and protected during this period will aid your recovery experience.
- Do not use any other products, including cleanser, on your skin within the first 24 hours post-procedure. Unexpected complications may occur when products not proven safe for use with microneedling are applied post-procedure. In lieu of cleansing your skin, you may rinse with cool water as needed.
- If you have RESCUE Calming Complex, begin applying as needed after the first 24 hours to help soothe and calm the skin. RESCUE was specifically formulated for post-micronedling.
- Strictly avoid sun exposure on the day of the procedure as you will not be wearing sunscreen. You may return to sunscreen use 24 hours following the procedure. Continue to minimize sun exposure for 72 hours post-procedure.
- Avoid strenuous exercise or excessive perspiration for 72 hours post-procedure, as excess blood flow and sweat can cause discomfort and irritation to compromised skin.
- Avoid using any active skincare topical products, such as retinoids, vitamin C etc., for the first week after the SkinPen Precision procedure to reduce risk of irritation.
- Schedule your next SkinPen Precision appointment with your healthcare provider as recommended.
- Contact your healthcare provider with any questions regarding the procedure.
