Fillers Pre and Post Care
Fillers Pre-Care Instructions
- Expect swelling, tenderness, and bruising after your treatment for several days or more.
- People with active cold sores or fever blisters, canker sores, or shingles should postpone treatment. Please contact us 1 week before treatment if you are prone to cold sores/fever blisters or shingles.
- No Vycross® fillers (Voluma®, Vollure®, Volbella®) to be done within 2 weeks of any dental work or dental cleaning.
- Please let us know if you have started taking antibiotics or other medications since your initial visit.
- For the best results, avoid advil®, ibuprofen, aleve®, aspirin, motrin®, vitamins E, fish oil, and St. John's Wort 5 days before treatment. Don't stop taking any medications without consulting your doctor first.
- Tell your provider about all medical conditions, medications you are taking, skin disorders, allergies, anaphylaxis history, and any other illnesses you may have.
- Reduce the risk of bruising by avoiding alcoholic beverages 48 hours before treatment. In the absence of contraindications from your current medication regimen, consider taking over-the-counter Arnica supplements to reduce bruising (available online, at most supplement stores, Refined Glow, Whole Foods®, etc.). Seven to ten days before treatment, start taking oral Arnica. The bottle will tell you how to take it.
- For dermal filler placement in the tear trough, you are advised to take an antihistamine for three days (Claritin®, Zyrtec®, or Loratadine®) before the procedure.
- Treatment is not available to pregnant or nursing women. It is not possible to treat patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment. It is necessary for patients to be in remission for 12 months before they can be treated.
- For the week before treatment, Tylenol® will not cause bruising. To help with possible discomfort, take acetaminophen (i.e. Tylenol®) one hour before your scheduled appointment. You should not exceed 3000mg of acetaminophen/Tylenol® per day.
Fillers Post-Care Instructions
- Several days should pass before you feel any redness or swelling. Bruising may occur and may last up to 14 days. Immediately following treatment, cold compresses/ice may be used to reduce swelling. For 3 days, apply a cold compress to the area 5 minutes at a time for several seconds at a time.
- Certain areas of the face such as the under eyes, are more likely to swell. Swelling and bruising may last several days to weeks. For any other concerns or blanching (whitening of the skin), please contact our office.
- Avoid rubbing, pushing, or manipulating the injection sites for 48 hours after injection.
- Avoid exercise for 24 to 72 hours after procedure, since it may cause swelling.
- After treatment, your skin may be more sensitive. Use gentle skincare products during this time and wait 3 days before using harsher treatment products such as retinol, or AHA. Makeup can be applied 24 hours after treatment.
- If you have any signs of infection (fevers, chills, worsening redness, pain) or any purple, purple painful spreading discoloration please call us immediately.
